A long run is not defined by a fixed number of kilometres. It is defined relative to your own habits: it is an outing longer than your usual workouts, run mostly at low intensity. That nuance matters, because it means a beginner’s long run and an experienced runner’s long run do not last the same time but follow the same logic.
The physiological and mental benefits
Physiologically, this workout builds general endurance, improves the use of fat as an energy source, and strengthens muscles, tendons and joints against the demands of prolonged effort. It also improves running economy, meaning your ability to move with less energy spent at a given pace. These adaptations take time and only happen with regular exposure to this kind of effort.

Plan your hydration and your recovery
Hydration should be planned, not endured. Setting off with a plan (when to drink, how much, what) and adjusting it to conditions is a skill you develop. In marathon preparation, a long run generally lasts between 1 h 15 and 2 h 30 depending on the phase of training and the runner’s level. The last big outing before the race should be scheduled at least a week beforehand, and kept short enough that you do not arrive at the start line tired.
Secret 6: prepare your recovery from the moment you stop
What happens in the minutes after a long run matters as much as the run itself. Changing quickly so you are not sitting in damp kit, keeping warm, eating within the post-effort window: these simple actions have a direct effect on the quality of your recovery. Gentle stretching, rest and possibly a foam roller to reduce muscular stiffness complete the picture.
Recovery is not a bonus reserved for professionals. It is an integral part of progress, and neglecting it after a demanding workout wastes part of the work you just did.
