Reverse periodization takes the opposite line to traditional planning. Instead of first building a large base of easy endurance and then gradually adding harder workouts, you start with short, sustained, structured efforts. Then, as the target date approaches, you lengthen the workouts and increase the time spent at intensities specific to the race you are aiming at.

In road running, triathlon and cycling this logic is already familiar. In trail it takes on a particular colour, because the discipline mixes long endurance, climbing, muscular demands and pacing. In ultra-trail the question gets finer still: the aim is not only to go fast but to last, sometimes for a very long time.

Over the weeks you lengthen the outings, the time spent on hilly ground and the trail specificity. Long runs, back-to-back efforts in a fatigued state and managing climbing take up more room. Over twelve weeks you can raise the volume through the first ten while gradually reducing intensity, then ease off in the last two to arrive fresh.

What really changes in ultra-trail

A gradual transfer towards specific endurance

In ultra-trail, care is needed. The concept stays interesting, but ultra rewards muscular resistance, energetic robustness, digestive tolerance and the ability to last. So you develop some high-intensity qualities at the start, then transfer progressively towards specific endurance. Very hard workouts lose importance in favour of long runs and very long easy endurance, particularly four or five weeks out from the event.

And being stronger over efforts of three to eight minutes is no guarantee of being better after ten hours of racing.

It is relevant for an experienced trail runner aiming at a spring or summer objective while getting through a complicated winter. It can also suit an experienced ultra runner wanting to revive certain qualities after the off-season, provided the specific endurance phase is then developed sufficiently.

For a novice runner, an unstable training history or a need to rebuild a base, it is better to stay with a more classic logic centred on easy endurance.
